There are many advantages to living in a small town such as Góis, one of these being that, generally speaking, everyone knows where everything is, without the need for long explanations or directions, or even an address. So we came slightly unstuck today when trying to make a bank transfer, and the bank at the UK end insisted on being provided with the full address of our bank here. Apparently ‘Caixa Geral – Góis’ was not sufficient. There was no alternative but to go out into the street and hunt for the name plaque, and then memorise ‘Rua Comandante Henrique Bebiano B Neves’ – not quite as snappy as ‘High Street’ but a lot more imposing..>>>> more

17th February Yesterday was Carnaval – a day of partying throughout the country, as in many other parts of the world. In some of the villages of the concelho of Góis, Entrudo, (the traditional Portuguese term for the fun and games of this festival) is still celebrated in the traditional fashion of dressing up in old clothing (often of the opposite sex) and creating general mayhem. It is an opportunity to play tricks, make ‘political’ points, and playfully expose everybody’s weaknesses! Perhaps unfortunately, these traditional antics have largely been replaced by the parades that have been popularized in Brazil and returned across the Atlantic. The element of dressing-up is however, still very important, and in much the same way that North American and British children dress up in costumes at Halloween, children in Portugal dress up in all manner of costumes for Carnaval. Not only the children – as many towns hold parades where the local adults also dress up in glamourous, or not-so-glamourous attire, that sometimes still has a political or topical association. This year the town of Góis did not hold its annual Carnaval parade for the schoolchildren, in deference to the recent death of the ex-President. However, there were plenty of celebrations in the neighbouring towns, and after eating our traditional ‘Shrove Tuesday’ pancakes, we headed out to Côja in the early evening, where a wonderfully loud and exuberant firework display took place over the river. Despite the persistent rain of the day the streets of Côja were filled for the spectacle, and the rain kindly let up sufficiently that we could put down the umbrellas and gaze up at the fire-filled night sky in all its splendour!

I would like to take you down to the riverside in Góis, to enjoy the activities of the birds among the trees where we walking this morning. The first treat is a flash of electric blue as a kingfisher skims along the river’s surface – I know this is the kingfisher’s habitat, but it is always a lovely surprise to catch him in flight. The ground is dusted with pollen, and the fluffy seed from the bulrushes is tumbling about. Amongst the trees, now festooned with catkins, the sparrows and finches are busy in the sunshine, and a robin accompanies us as we go along. more>>>

Life in Góis 29th January

Today the funeral was held of the ex-President of Góis, José Girão Vitorino, who held office as President from 2001 to October 2009. The streets of Góis were thronged with people coming to pay their last respects, many of them carrying floral tributes. Shops and businesses throughout the town closed at 3pm, as young and old gathered to join the funeral procession from the Bombeiros to the cemetery at the Igreja Matriz where the ex-president was laid to rest. José Girão Vitorino was obviously a much-loved and respected man. In our own meetings with him he was unfailingly courteous and always ready to listen, lending his valuable support to our endeavours. Even though fighting a terminal illness in his later days, he would always strive to be there to attend local events in his presidential capacity, appearing gracious and appreciative. He will be sadly missed in the town.

The breaking news here in Góis is that the Vale do Ceira and the Penedos de Góis have been put forward as entries into a competition to find the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal! As we are prone to singing the praises of this beautiful region this does not come as a great surprise to us, and they will certainly be getting our vote. As the council’s website so eloquently puts it: “The Ceira Valley is a living representation of the expression ‘enchanted valley’” - we could not agree more. And at up to 1043m altitude, the quartzite peaks (Penedos) that rise above the Ceira give stunning views over the county and an invitation to the adventurous to explore and enjoy the heights. We wish the Município de Góis every success in the competition, the results of which, according to a public vote, will be known by 7th March. Yesterday was ‘Dia dos Reis’ or the ‘Day of the Kings’ – the time when according to the account in Matthew´s gospel, the three kings arrived at the stable to present their gifts to the infant Jesus. Although Portugal does not celebrate this day with quite as much gusto as the Spanish, it is still a day that is marked in the calendar, particularly by the younger children. On January 6th the children of Góis wear home-made crowns and go in groups around the town, singing special songs for the occasion. We had the pleasure to be visited by two groups of children – one from the primary school and one from the nursery. They sang to us and held open their bags for our contribution of coins – it could have been sweets, but we had none! Fortunately the sun put in an appearance yesterday morning, making it a pleasant morning out of the classroom for the young carolers, who provided a welcome diversion for those of us at work.

Christmas is just 2 days away and a severe weather warning has been issued over Portugal for Christmas Eve. Here in Góis we have not experienced anything exceptional, although the weather has been changing almost daily from extreme cold and frost to strong winds and heavy rainfall, with the occasional glimpses of blue sky and sunshine between the clouds. A popular outdoor Christmas decoration here is Santa Claus climbing a ladder up to a window – this morning the Santas of Góis were looking distinctly sodden and bedraggled as they swung limply on their ladders!

We stepped out this morning into a world white with frost, crunching underfoot and causing us to gasp from the sharpness of the cold in our faces. By mid-morning the sky is a cloudless blue, and the air has a dizzying clarity. As the sun gains in strength we know we will be gradually shedding the layers we donned so gratefully at daybreak until the point where we are basking in mid-afternoon sunshine – but when the sun goes down it will be time to get a good fire going. A temperature variation of 20 degrees is not unusual on a day like today, and I find this climate of extremes invigorating – like an extended sauna that leaves me feeling wide awake and glad to be alive!

7th December December is here, and Christmas is fast approaching, which feels a little unbelievable on a warm sunny afternoon when many people are strolling around in t-shirts! But a little more believable on a cold and misty morning when you can almost (but not quite yet) feel the frost in the air. The Christmas lights are up in Góis – probably a couple of months later than most towns in Britain – and the place is looking prettily festive after dark.

14th November It is impossible to miss the fact that we are now into serious olive-picking season. Driving through the villages around Góis has lately become even more hazardous than usual – as well as the usual sun-bathing, car-chasing dogs, the narrow streets now sport precarious ladders propped at odd angles against olive trees supporting little old ladies (usually) entangled in the upper branches. Just as a month or so ago everywhere you looked there were buckets of grapes, and two months ago there were maize cobs, now it is olives, olives everywhere – olives spread on the ground, olives in tubs, olives wrapped and on their way to the olive press on the back of tractors. Everyone is either talking about picking their olives or actively picking them – probably this weekend at any one time 50% of the region’s population is up an olive tree! This is the time when the presses are put into action and all that wonderful, rich green olive oil is the result – no longer needed to burn for light as it was in the past, but still very much an essential of everyday life for so many of us.

Tonight was Bonfire Night – a date that it is impossible for anybody who was ever a child in the UK to forget! So it was great to get an invitation to a bonfire party – no guy, no fireworks, but a marvelous bonfire sending up sparks to rival many a Roman candle. In the Celtic calendar Samhain, on October 31st, is the greatest of the fire festivals, and there does seem something right about having a large blaze at this time of the year, as even in Portugal we are feeling the encroaching cold and darkness of winter. It was probably fortunate that it had rained for most of the day beforehand, as it meant there was less likelihood of an unintended larger fire – always a concern here in the dry months.

The annual Chestnut and Honey Fair was held in Góis on Sunday, as always on the 1st November. For many people this bank holiday comprises first a visit to the cemetery to lay their flowers, and then an afternoon spent at the fair, admiring the produce and crafts and enjoying the traditional folkloric dancing. We always look forward to this fair, which is very much an event in the local calendar – just the name ‘Castanha e mel’ is enough to make my mouth water! The autumn leaves had formed a thick carpet on the ground at the Parque do Baio where the fair was held, and all around appeared golden-brown – the heaped-up piles of chestnuts and walnuts, the bottles of Jeropiga and aguardente, and of course the big jars of Serra da Lousã honey and beeswax candles.

Today is of course, Halloween, the eve of All Hallows or All Souls Day, otherwise known as the Day of the Dead. While the children are busy carving their pumpkin lanterns and dressing up as witches and vampires, the older generation are more concerned to honour their forbears, and are making their annual visit to the cemetery this weekend. Here they tidy up the gravesides or tombs of the deceased family members, and adorn them with flowers and candles. The effect, en masse, is a transformation of the usually gloomy cemetery into a garden of yellow and white chrysanthemums by day – and by night, a glow of red candlelight lighting the way for the spirits of the ancestors…

Life in Góis 27th October

Last week I took a few days away to visit family in Edinburgh. The day I flew the rain decided to sheet down in torrents, almost causing me to miss my flight as the rush-hour traffic into Lisbon snarled into gridlock under the weight of the wet. Happily I did manage to get away, and happily now I am back, the sun is shining once again and the temperature is a warm 20ºC. Something I have been musing on since I first came to Portugal is how it is that this is the only country I know of in Western Europe that does not name the days of the week after the planets and their associated gods. I have asked many Portuguese people how their days of the week have basically become known as ‘Second Day’ ‘Third day’ etc. with only Saturday and Sunday being named Sábado and Domingo respectively. What happened to the other days? Nobody could tell me.
