The village of Algares is situated in the valley of the Ribeira da Simantorta. At the top of the village is the chapel dedicated to Senhora da Conceição and São Paulo. The casa do convivio, festa area and the village wash-house are all above the village. As the road drops to the houses, it passes under a large cork oak. There are a number of these trees around the village, and they are amongst the largest and oldest cork oaks in the Góis region. Because of the village’s sheltered position, there are a number of lemon trees on the terraces around the village. The older buildings are built from the local stone, and there are also a number of newer houses in the village.
In the past, a festa was held on the day of Carnival, when everybody would dress up in disguise and have a great deal of fun. About 60 years ago, as Sr. Manuel Rosa told us, his grandfather took a wooden box, used for measuring the maize, and put it over three sticks to make it look like an old box camera on a tripod. His grandson, Sr, Manuel Rosa sat at his side on a small bank. The people of the village posed in front of the ‘camera’ while the boy drew a picture. The grandfather’s camera ‘clicked’ (by knocking with a stone on the box’s side), and the grandson handed the picture out to the villager that posed. The pictures were always portraits of dogs, cats and donkeys and this always provoked a lot of amusement and laughter. Everyone enjoyed these jokes. When Sr. Manuel was a young man, he went down to the mill to grind the maize. A young girl of the village also went to the mill to grind maize at the same time. The other villagers were on the lookout, and started throwing stones on the roof of the mill to ensure that there would be no funny business! |
