The village of Fonte Limpa is 2km along the road from Chã de Alvares to Pampilhosa da Serra. The village is south-facing and sits in a little valley. Although Fonte Limpa is a small village it collectively makes some of the best use of its facilities. The Casa do Convivio is open daily, providing employment for the bar staff, and bringing the community together to talk and play games. In the village is a chapel dedicated to São José that was totally restored in 1982.
It is said that Fonte Limpa was founded by two brothers with the name ‘Campos,’ who owned some land here on which they built their houses. They had servants and so the village began to grow. The water of the spring was very good, and it is probable that this gave the name ‘Fonte Limpa’ (‘clean spring’) to the village. The water for the village of Fonte Limpa now comes from a barroca called “Braceiro”.
The valley below the village leads down to the Ribeira de Burreies, where there were two mills, and a lagar. Further up this valley there are three small hamlets, now abandoned: Freiras, Covão da Pedra and Vale do Pão. It is said that in the past there was a company here that produced ‘burel’ - a kind of felt cloth used for making capes.
