The village of Roda Fundeira is situated in the steep sloping valley of the Ribeira do Sinhel. A narrow cobbled street runs through the village, and a newer tarmaced road runs on the hill above the village. Narrow paths and steps run between the two roads. Beautiful xisto houses, some newly renovated, stand side by side with newer white-painted buildings. Amongst the houses of the village there is a small ruin that was once the village chapel. The granite stonework, that once housed a bronze bell shows where the bell rope wore away at the stone. Originally dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos, the chapel had a private entrance, used by the people from the big house that used to adjoin it. The new chapel was built higher up the slope, its bold architecture in contrast to the little ruined chapel. The village’s history may go back to the 8th Century, and possibly to the Roman occupation. We know that the Romans were mining gold in the area, and there are several mines down the valley that are said to have been worked by the Moors. Below the village the river falls into pools, much frequented in the summer by bathers. Fertile terraces surround the village, and some flat agricultural land borders the river. Orange and lemon trees grow amongst the houses. As well as the early mining, the villagers made a living from sheep and goat-tending, selling the wool to the mill at Alvares for spinning. In the early 20th Century the villagers were employed in mining tungsten, and the conditions were such that there was a high death rate amongst the young miners, and many young widows in the village. Today the village has an active hands-on community, as the Roda Fundeira sign indicates, with the Comissão de Melhoramentos de Roda Fundeira organizing local improvements and events. The community also has a forward-looking approach, with a well-presented website promoting the community and events - www.roda-fundeira.blogspot.com |
