Candosa is a pretty village on the south bank of the river Ceira. The modern road bypasses Candosa on its way from Góis to Colmeal, although historically the village is on the junction between the old road and the road to Cadafaz. The land around the village on both sides of the river is less steep than most of the Ceira valley, and is extensively cultivated. The village is comprised of an interesting mixture of large restored xisto dwellings and painted houses. The old olive press, which dates back to 1860, has been closed for 20 years now. It was built by the inhabitants of Candosa, who gave it to the church for safekeeping. However, the story goes that some years later a priest put the press up for sale and the inhabitants had to buy it back. From this time on some olive oil was donated to the church after every pressing, the quantity depending on whether it was a good harvest or not. The patron saint of Candosa is Nossa Senhora do Remédio, and the chapel is located on a flat piece of ground above the village adjacent to the festa area. |
