Relvas

The chapel of Santa Luzia sits on the top of a small hill – the only surviving remnant of the village of Relvas. The chapel was restored in the mid-19th century through the sponsorship of Barão de Louredo, a locally-born man. The village has been abandoned now for more than half a century. The main street, covered with grass, leads between crumbling walls, and tall cherry trees grow where abandoned gardens were once tended.

The village location is unusual, as it has no apparent water source. It is probable that the chapel was at the side of an old road, and the village built to accommodate workers for the local mines. In 1990 a forest fire destroyed what was left of the houses.
