Tarrastal is a pretty xisto village above the Ribeira do Corterredor - a mixture of newly renovated traditional houses and ruins. A lot of the original construction was carried out in the 1930’s – 1950’s during the tungsten mining boom, although the original village is probably much older. Narrow streets lead between the houses, where tables and benches are shaded by old olive and cherry trees. Below the village is the old mill where the river was dammed and diverted to provide land for agriculture. The modern road running through the village was only built in the 1960’s. and the older road runs below the village, crossing over a narrow stone bridge. Around the same time as the new road, the large house on the outside of the village was built, and the owner is responsible for building the corn mill and mill pond that lie below the house. |
