Alegria

Alegria is a small hamlet close to the village of Ponte de Sotão, on the road out from Góis to Lousã. The name of the village- Alegria – means “joy”. The houses of the village sit on either side of the road, and down the slope towards the valley bottom. The paper factory at Ponte de Sotão, that was once the major employer in the area, and responsible for the growth of the small hamlet closed several years ago. In Alegria there was one of the largest olive presses in the Góis region, that took advantage of the paper factory’s energy supply, rather than a reliance on water power. The building has now been converted into a large house. The village was home, during the 1930’s and 1940’s, to the mine engineer Stanley Mitchell, who was responsible for pioneering the tungsten mining, and indirectly responsible for economic growth in the region at this time. He left a legacy not only of the mining industry, but also the hospital in Góis, roads and bridges.
