Alvém

Roman or Moorish? The village of Alvém is situated approximately 150m from the course of a Roman military road dating from around 200 A.D. and Roman ceramics have been found a short distance from the village. However, the name Alvém would appear to be Moorish in origin. The only thing for certain is that Alvém is a very old village. The village today is a collection of old and renovated xisto houses of charm and character, approximately 1km distance from Góis. The village has a number of large wells, supplying water to the vegetable gardens and olive trees that surround the village. At the head of the village is a beautiful little chapel, rebuilt in1936 by Alberto Braz. At the bottom end of the village, down a very narrow lane, is a magnificent font and water trough, originally built in 1938 to water oxen, sheep and goats, its pre-war architecture looking slightly out of place in its rural surroundings.
