Casalinho de Baixo translates as “little hamlet at the bottom”. Originally a quinta and several cottages in close proximity, but now an attractive village with modern and old habitations side by side. The village has good flat land, that was once the bed of a lake, and there is an old irrigation system still maintained and used to water the fields. A short way from the village flows the river Ceira, with a new steel footbridge providing access to the far bank. Casalinho de Baixo is a tranquil village and is remarkable for the number of vines that have been trained over roads, courtyards and paths, providing shade over the summer, and of course the grapes to be turned into wine. Just above the flat land is the old quinta where the town tailor used to live, and below, the village maize mill, built in 1809. It is one of the largest maize mills, with three large mill stones, one of which is still in daily use, grinding the maize grown in the village. |
