Caselhos sits on the hillside above the River Sotão, as it flows north to meet the Ceira. Here the village is bathed in sunshine, even on a winter’s afternoon, and enjoys spectacular views both up and down the valley. To the south, the distinctive triangle of the Pena de Góis dominates the skyline – to the north the valley broadens out towards Vila Nova do Ceira. Caselhos is a linear village, with little alleyways running up the hill, where you are likely to spot a tub of flowering cyclamen, a lone chicken, or a cat sunning itself. At the south end of the village is the festa area, with an unusually pretty chapel and bell tower. Walking through the village you may meet the older residents of the community, sitting in their doorways to enjoy the sunshine and the view. Down the hill, in the pastures below, goats enjoy clambering over the rocks and finding whatever is good to eat. Orange, lemon and tangerine trees grow in the gardens, and many people have beehives. Caselhos is situated 5.5km from Góis by road, to the west, and 3km south of the attractive village of Vila Nova do Ceira with all its amenities. |
