The village of Ladeiras sits along and below the N2 road from Góis to Pampilhosa da Serra. At an altitude of close to 500m it gives dramatic views up the Ceira valley. The name ‘Ladeira’ means ‘steep slope’, and the village sits protected from strong winds on the hillside. Despite the altitude, orange and lemon trees still grow in the village. ‘Ladeyras’ was recorded in the population census of 1527 as having three permanent dwellings.
An elderly woman of the village told us, that at a young age she had been responsible for 10 brothers and sisters after her mother died. She had to go with a canister on her back full of maize twice a week to the mill at Soito Redondo, down on the river, to grind maize. This was so that she could bake the traditional ‘Broa’ bread to feed the family. |
