Half-way between Góis and Vila Nova do Ceira lies the village of Nogueiro (‘walnut tree’). At the centre of the village is the chapel, dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, and at the side of the chapel is the festa area. The village takes advantage of the gently sloping fertile ground. There are many fruit trees and olive trees, although fewer olive trees then there once was. The inhabitants of the village traditionally worked in agriculture and forestry They cultivated maize, rye and wheat, that was taken to the mill of Quinta do Nogueiro or Quinta do Carvão down on the side of the river Ceira, to be ground. Sometimes the millers of the two mills came by donkey or mule to collect the cereals. The villagers also worked as wood sawyers (Serradores) in the hills, and there were two shoemakers, one clog-maker, some resin collectors and carpenters working in the village. Sr. Rui Daniel Barata Duarte, a carpenter in the village like his father, showed us his tools and the carts they had made.
Everyone also worked on their fields and sometimes they would get up at 4 a.m. to start working with their oxen. In a place called Vale das Fontes, situated above Nogueiro on the hillside, is the spring. There are also some wells in the fields, some with iron water wheels that were pushed by a donkey or an ox. |
