The road to Pena winds around the craggy ridge of the Pena de Góis, then runs under high cliffs until it reaches the little bridge into the village.
The village of Pena has recently been renovated, restoring many of the xisto buildings and re-cobbling the network of streets. As with many of the old villages, the streets were designed for people, donkeys and oxen, but not for the motor car, so if you are visiting you should leave your car in the bottom of the village.
If you follow the main street through the village, to where it turns into a footpath, the path leads down steeply to the River Sotão, which runs through the gorge, tumbling over large boulders, and cascading into deep pools, shaded by the branches of wild cherry and ancient chestnut trees.
