Quinta do Carvão is a small hamlet of 3 houses, with broad fertile fields ending at the banks of the river Ceira. A small mill by the weir still grinds the maize that is harvested on the land around Quinta do Carvão. The name translates as “Farm of Carbon” which may refer to charcoal burning – an activity undertaken in the area since at least the Bronze Age, and today there is still a commercial charcoal factory on the road to Liboreiro, 3km away. A little way from the hamlet there stands a large polythene greenhouse, taking advantage of the rich soils to grow young citrus trees. |
