The village of Regateira sits along the road from Góis to Bordeiro and onwards to Arganil. The village does not appear in the census of 1527, and the number of old houses are very few. There is an old quinta on a rise behind the village, that may be the oldest house in the settlement. There is also one of the largest olive presses surviving with all the machinery, but it is no longer in use. In the past there was a smith working in the village, and a woman weaver who made carpets. Today the village has a petrol station, a café, a carpenter and a market garden. The valley at this point is broad and fertile, and is still used to grow maize. In the 19th century there were plans to build a railway to Arganil, that would have passed through the village. A little way to the north, the work started on constructing a tunnel. The financial cost meant that the construction work was called off, and the railway stopped at Serpins.
When driving through the village, please ensure that you observe the speed limit, for the safety and well-being of all the inhabitants. |
