Oliveirinhas

The village of Oliveirinhas is mainly situated around the road junction between Monteira, Terras and Varzea Grands. ‘Oliveirinhas’ means ‘little olive trees’, and around the village there are still many old olive trees to be seen.
In the house with the red doors used to live a shoemaker. The people in the village lived from agriculture, and every piece of land was cultivated.

Occasionally people used to come into the village with baskets, asking for contributions for the festas. As they did not have much money, people used to donate all kinds of things - beans, eggs, maize etc. From the proceeds of selling this produce, they were then able to hold their festas. People from Oliveirinhas also used to go to the festas in Vila Nova do Ceira, Candosa and Barreiro. (The festa of Sr.ª da Candosa was always held on 15th August, when arches decorated with herbs and flowers were set alight. This festa is still held on the same date, though sadly, without the arches and bonfires.)
