The little village of Santo Velho sits on the hillside above the river Sótão, on the narrow road from Vila Nova do Ceira to Caselhos. In the past the hamlet consisted of only a single house where one family lived – now it is joined by a handful of more recently built homes, with stone walls built out of the traditional round boulders. In the fertile fields, olive trees and grapevines are still cultivated.
