If any village in the Góis region were to be compared to the Garden of Eden, Tôpa would surely be a candidate. As the road to Tôpa leaves Vila Nova do Ceira, it runs through some of the most fertile land in the region, made up of small fields with many old olive trees and a network of irrigation channels taking water to the growing crops. The round glacial boulders that once littered the area have been gathered up and made into walls between the fields and along the road. The hamlet consists of only a handful of houses and a few stone buildings, all made from the same boulders and stones as the walls. The road into Tôpa is tarmaced. The roads that lead on from Tôpa to Murtinheira are not tarmaced, and they follow the course of the main irrigation channels that follow the contours of the landscape, rather than travelling in a straight line. |
