Coiços is situated a short distance from the village of Aldeia Velha. The valley is deep and descends swiftly. It has been terraced with huge walls, some exceeding 3m in height, to create land suitable for growing maize. Although the village is now deserted, some of the land is still cultivated, and brightly –coloured sheets are hung around the fields to scare away the wild boar. You can still make your way down the old road, now chest high in bracken. The xisto buildings, once used to house sheep, goats and pigs, still have their roofs, but the houses are little more than ruins. A little further up the valley is an old mill called “Moinho dos Coiços”, that used to grind the maize grown in the valley. The stream, that provided water for the village, can no longer be relied on to provide water all year round, as the eucalyptus planting has affected the springs.
