The village of Foz da Cova sits in a little valley sheltered from the westerly winds by Soito hill. The stream that runs below the village, the Ribeira de Foz da Cova, supplied water to the terraces that were once cultivated. There used to be settlements further up the valley, but they are long since abandoned. Sadly, in 1989 a big fire destroyed much of the village of Foz da Cova, and only a few houses were reconstructed. Several xisto buildings, however, are still standing. Down by the stream you can still see the ruins and the water wheel of the old lagar that pressed the olives for Malhada and Quinta de Belide, as well as for Foz da Cova. The lagar was still working until the fire of 1989. On the other side of the bridge there was once a mill. |
