Quinta das Águias (‘Farm of the Eagles’) is located below the mountain of Caveiras. The farm sits at a little over 650m above sea level, and dates from around the 1950’s when the valley was terraced. The mountain stream is contained by a levada, also constructed around this time. Originally established as a pig farm, it is surprising to see such a large array of buildings in this remote and secluded location. The present owner has carried out a considerable amount of work over the past decade, replanting native species of trees, maintaining and rebuilding the terraces, and creating a cheese business with over 150 goats.* He works with a horse and a mule on the fields, in the traditional manner. The quinta is not supplied with mains electricity, but uses hydro and solar generated power.
The terraces in the valley, created to grow maize, are now planted with walnut trees. There were two mills in the valley, but unfortunately in the flood of November 2006 the mountain stream washed away walls and deposited large amounts of stones, leaving much recovery work to be done.
