Quinta de Belide

Quinta de Belide is the most easterly village in the Góis region. From the ridge above the village you can get a glimpse into how the mountains of this region were formed. During the last ice age an immense weight of ice pushed down on the region, and moved both north and south. At the Colada de Belide, a drop of rain can therefore make its way in two directions – it can flow down past Quinta de Belide, and on into the river Ceira, and then the Mondego through Coimbra to join the ocean at Figueira de Foz; or south down the Ribeira do Moninho to the river Zézere, joining the river Tejo, and thence to Lisbon.

The hamlet of Quinta de Belide sits at the bottom of a mountain col. At 650m above sea level it is dwarfed by the surrounding peaks, that all exceed 1000m.

Quinta de Belide has been owned by one family since around 1900, when members of the family returned from working in Argentina and the whole family, of about 20-30 people, moved into the quinta. A woman who grew up there told us how they all lived and worked closely together on the quinta, labouring from sunrise to sundown. The water supply was plentiful, and they lived mainly from agriculture - maize and potatoes being the main crops grown.  They had no oxen, so when they needed to plough the bigger fields somebody came over from another village with an ox to do the work. The quinta  had its own mill for grinding maize, and the olives where carried to the lagar of Foz da Cova for pressing. They also made wine. Goats and sheep were kept, and it was important to guard the smaller animals well because of the wolves that were in the region up until the 1950’s. The highlight of the year was the annual festa in Malhada –  the one time when everybody could let their hair down!
